A little poem for those like me who'd like to sing a bit better:
THE MAN WHO SANG IN THE KEY OF “H”
(By Mike Massey)
I thought I’d take some lessons
To try to learn to sing
Cause it always seemed to me my songs
Were just a bit off-key
So I hired me a voice coach
To show me what to do
You may've heard my wails
As I sang the scales
And gave my coach the blues
Cause she’d never heard the sounds I sing
When I get done her ears would ring

When I get done her ears would ring
And though she told me have some faith
I was singing my songs in the key of “H”
She told me “use my diaphragm”
She drew me up a diagram
Made me use a straw to breathe
And turning blue I began to see
That singing’s just mind over matter
If you don’t mind then it don’t matter
So sing your lines
And rhyme your rhymes
Take a breath and do your best
Causing singing’s not a test
As surely as the Dawn of day
I now have a bit of range
My kids think me a bit deranged
Cause Dads can be so dadgum strange
But just like life is not a race
Singing in “H” is not a disgrace
There’s no accounting for some folk's taste
So don’t let your sweet voice go to waste
And if you find that you’re like me
And your notes don’t fit in “A” to” G”
But there’s still stars you want to chase
Don’t ever forget the man who sings
In the lovely key of “H”
Dedicated to my voice coach extraordinaire Dawn Urquhart Dixon
